In Brief
eCornwall is the result of a collaboration between PFA
Research and Cornwall College.
It is intended to be as complete a listing of Cornwall on the World Wide Web
as possible, although focused mainly on Cornish business.
The site has a number of objectives:
- To promote Cornish organisations with Web sites - if you looking for a Cornish supplier with Internet capabilities, you are likely to find it here.
- To encourage Cornish organisations to develop Web sites - listings on this site are free, so Cornish companies with Web sites receive free exposure.
- To encourage Cornish economic development agencies to promote Cornwall on the Web - this site provides a focus for that promotion.
The Concept
This Internet Business Directory will initially combine the functions of:
- A Library
- A Product and Services Directory
- An Information Search Facility
Later, given the demand, we could add:
- An Information Advice Centre
- A Discussion Forum
- A News Service
eCornwall offers the following services and facilities
The Library consists of hyperlinks to relevant sites that are indexed and organised into a directory system designed for Cornwall. Each hyperlink has a summary description to assist the user, who is able to browse the directory as in a conventional library. The stock of sites in the library is the result of many months of Web research and site review, all of which is made available instantly to the user. On-going research will continue to expand the library. Unlike a conventional library however, publications in the eCornwall library (Web sites) update themselves.
The Product and Services Directory is similar to the library. To assist users, hyperlinks in each category are provided on an objective basis to the specific location in supplier Web sites related to the subject. This in turn gives supplier sites very effective exposure to users.
The Information Search Facility is a search engine, which can search an index of the full text of every publication in the library within a matter of seconds. Users can directly search a focused set of relevant web sites, rather than wade through the results of searching millions of irrelevant sites. This is like being able to "thumb through" every single page in a paper-based specialist library, in seconds, and without the search ever going out of date.
